How much would you spend on the fancy little cuddle toy that captures hearts world over? At the American International Toy Fair in New York on Sunday, an out-of-box teddy bear created quite a buzz at the Gund booth. For, it was plush, had amazing features, and sported an all-time high price tag of $10,000.

The Snuffles toy is replete with all things precious in the name of a toy. It is made with white alpaca fur. Black Tahitian pearls make up its eyes. And the teddy bear also sports a 10-carat diamond necklace with a  white gold chain. It was only natural that the toy became a showpiece of sorts at the fair, with a security guard keeping his watchful eye over it. As for the teddy bear, it was enclosed in a glass case and further protected by a velvet rope barricade.

Now, it is anyone’s guess how a child hoping to cuddle it up, would reach anywhere near it. In times of recession, take heart from the teddy bear, for it is meant more for a charity auction than a fancy kiddie buy. Snuffles, the bear, will tour the country till it goes up for bidding.

The latest of watch models from Ateliers DeMonaco was displayed recently at the Geneva Time Exhibition. It is not however on cards for official release till Baselworld happens. It’s a classic looking piece from the new watchmaker. It’s called the DeMonaco Carre d’Or Squelette Tourbillon Minute Repeater Watch. You could call it Black Pearl too.

Parts of the DeMonaco watches are Swiss made and assembled in Monaco. The super luxe watches are to be unveiled as Limited Edition. And guess what the number of pieces would be? Eight. The one that has just been made, has already got sold!

Like their other watches, the new DeMonaco Carre d’Or Squelette watch comes in a 46 by 50mm case in 18k rose gold with a titanium core.

The watch has a 48 hour power reserve. Its tourbillon has DeMonaco’s signature sapphire crystal bridge – an intricate piece.

The watch dial has been skeletonised, cut to form in typical Roman numerals which make it look like an ancient art piece. The hour makers are diamond shaped titanium ones, polished and neat, while watch hands are made of gold.

When you turn the watch over, you find a beautiful and unique manner of movement decoration. Most shapes are small pyramids.

The watch has a minute repeater, a wooden amplifier, and is hand finished. The price is $100,000 approximately.

In 2008, Rio Tinto’s Argyle Pink Diamond tender had a 1.77 carat, radiant-cut, fancy deep purplish-pink diamond that went unsold. And now the very same diamond has been recut and revamped by Scarcelli Diamonds to further manifest the color red. According to gemologist Joshua Sheby, his company saw a lot of potential in the precious ice in spite of its luster. Just that they took a chance with this particular Argyle pink diamond despite the fact that this variety is especially knwon for being rather difficult to cut.

As a result, the 1.61 carat, radiant-cut and purplish-red stone was churned out. And now his estimated worth is $2 million. Imagine, all this was done simply by readjusting certain angles that helped bring out the red component with the aid of fine notching.

The Gemological Institute of America has graded the Argyle Pink Diamond in question and called it the ‘Kimberly Red’. And this  upon a stone which further substantiates its worthiness. This one is the only diamond larger than 1.5 carats to be graded by the GIA as fancy purplish red in the past 10 years. It is rare and precious!!!

John Keats introduced us to the ‘truth’ connection with ‘beauty’. And here we are in the second decade of the 21st century looking at The Spirit of Beauty. This one can be seen at the Moris Art Center Gallery showcasing over 100 years of creative jewelry. Each of these pieces flaunts precious stones by Van Cleef & Arpels. In fact, the exhibition even borrows its name from the clip created by the brand which resembles a fairy.

The display is on in Toyo till the 17th of this month. After that it will proceed on a worldwide tour. And from what we hear, this exhibition is an experience in itself.

The credit for this goes to Patrick Jouin who first thought of this spectacular show spread across the 1,000 meter Moris Arts Center. The exhibitions follows four themes – The Spirit of Nature, The Spirit of Elegance, The Spirit of Adventure and Incarnations. In total there are 250 pieces on display including jewels, timepieces, fashion accessories and objets d’art.  The entry fee for the exhibition is set at 1,200 yen for adults, 1,000 yen for students and 500 yen for children 4 and older.
