Ulysse Nardin, the renowned luxury watch makers have given us several watches in the past with a musical soul. They have come up with another masterpiece called the Stranger which plays the greatest hit by master jazz artist Frank Sinatra – ‘Strangers in the night’. It is a limited edition design of a mechanical self-winding musical watch. What makes it different than similar watches released by Ulysse Nardin earlier is the use of silicium technology for the escapement and anchor of its UN-690 movement manufactured in-house. The process of setting the time has been made easier. The user need not pull the crown in the traditional way but can activate the function by a pusher.
The Musical Watch Developed During Five Years
The musical watch was developed over five years and has tried to come close to a classical music box. The difference is that it is worn on your wrist and its intricate mechanism can be viewed through a sapphire crystal. The musical project was pushed forward by the musician Yello and conceptual artist Dieter Meier who are partners and shareholder in the watch making company. The melody ‘Strangers in the Night’ can be set to play at the strike of every hour or whenever you want to. The pusher that activates it located at 10 o’clock. The watch is being made in rose gold and will have a limited production run of only 99 pieces.
‘Stranger’ Was Introduced to Zurich Press on March 13
The musical watch was unveiled in Zurich, Switzerland on March 13, 2013. It was a musical evening with star trumpeter Till Brönner providing the musical accompaniment for the presentation. He also played his own interpretation of Strangers in the Night. Sandra Studer, the renowned presenter led the presentation that was titled ‘Function and Aesthetics of the Wrist Watch’. Prof. Dr. Ludwig Oechslin was at hand to elaborate on the recent developments and the new technologies adapted for making mechanical timepieces. After all he is the mastermind behind many of these developments. Dieter Meier who is also known as the ‘Godfather of Techno Music’ was excited to see the watch become a reality as he was the main driving force behind the project. The press and the friends of Ulysse Nardin simply loved the new musical creation.
