Richard Gere Auctions his Guitars for a Million for Supporting Charities

Guitars have a wide ranging appeal. Every kid who goes through the phase of wanting to become an astronaut also goes through the phase of wanting to become a rock star and tries his hand at playing the guitar. Some who have an ear for music and an inclination end up becoming passionate about guitars, perhaps the strongest symbol of music. Richard Gere, the renowned movie star seems to be one of them as he had collected a large collection of guitars over the years. Very few people know that Gere is such an avid music lover.

Gere put his entire collection of guitars up for auction to support the causes and charities he supports. The guitar that fetched the highest price in the auction was a 1960 Gibson Les Paul which fetched $98,500. The final price exceeded the pre sales estimate by a full $10,000. There were a total of 107 guitars up for sale and the total collection from the auction amounted to a cool $936,438. It did not miss a million by much.

It was not a planned or thought out collection of guitars as Gere is not really a professional musician. He claims that he simply bought guitars that he liked and ended up with a large collection.  Some of the other guitars that generated a lot of interest from the bidders were a 1958 Gibson Flying V that sold for $74,500; a 1931 Martin D- 28 that fetched $62,500 and a Gibson ES-335TD with Sunburst finish that went for $9,500.
