Federer and Nadal Begin the New Tennis Calendar by Playing on a Floating Platform in Qatar

The intense rivalry between tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal is what makes the big tournaments interesting. The rivalry has been going on for few years now with the two occupying the top two rankings. Nadal has managed to dislodge Federer from the number one position but he hasn’t slipped much beyond that and is still a challenge that Nadal has to overcome to retain his number one ranking.

They were both in Qatar for the Qatar Open which is considered to be the official start of the tennis calendar leading to the first Slam in Australia. To promote the Qatar open both the tennis stars battled it out on a floating platform on a lagoon in Qatar with the city of Doha in the background. It was a thrilling and magnificent spectacle.

Tournament officials resort to similar promotional events and stunts. Federer has earlier played in a similar event , playing Andre Agassi on the Burj al-Arab’s sky-high helipad. AC Milan’s soccer pitch in the sky was a similar stunt in Dubai that created a big buzz. 2010 has been a very good year for Nadal as he won the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open titles. On the first day of 2011 he edged out Federer at Abu Dhabi’s invitational World Tennis Championships.
