The Edward M Kennedy Institute for the Senate to Open in 2013

Edward Kennedy the late Senator and the younger brother of President Kennedy is going to get his own institute next to his brother’s Presidential library and museum. The Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts has the honor of playing the host to these two prestigious institutions. The Edward M Kennedy Institute for the Senate will be situated next to the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and museum.

The renderings of the Edward Kennedy project was revealed this week. It is going to be an impressive institution. The project has been designed by Rafael Vinoly. The construction work of the building which will be set on a 44,000 square feet compound, will start this fall. The opening of the institute is being scheduled for 2013. The finances are being arranged for the construction work and starting an endowment. Peter Meade, the institute President said that they hoped to raise $125 million.

The Kennedys themselves have donated millions. Other donors have also given or pledged about $ 50 million. They hope to raise another $60 million by floating bonds in the market. This institute will not work like a museum or a library. It will be focused on education. Though it will have a replica of Kennedy’s office, digital library and archives, it will predominantly have classrooms.
