Winston Churchill’s unsmoked Havana cigar worth thousands

Sir Winston Churchill, the iconic British Prime Minister of the World War years has caught the imagination of the world over the years. Hence, it is not surprising that a collection of items formerly owned by the man are fetching very high prices at auctions. Amongst the most important collectors of his memorabilia is the man Malcolm S. Forbes Jr. who has amassed an impressive collection.

At a Christie’s auction, 84 items from this collection went under the hammer and managed to collect an impressive half a million pounds. An interesting item amongst the lot was an unsmoked Havana cigar, which was estimated to get atleast £1,500. But it surprised everyone by fetching an impressive £2,125. The cigar is accompanied by a note written by the Prime Minister himself to Christopher Dunn, with whom he was having dinner. The note reads: “Sir Winston Churchill… gave me this cigar at Luncheon – Hotel de Paris [Monte Carlo]” 12 April ’63.”

Mr. Forbes has been collecting the items for over 30 long years and this auction is just one third of the entire collection. The exact total for this sale was £577,063. With the other two auctions that might take place eventually will definitely take the total to over £1 million.
