Another Sculpture, Another Record! Featured above is a white sculpture white (seems as if engulfed with a layer of snow) portraying a voluptuous nude creature holding a cigarette with elegance that lately fetched $1.6 million at auction Latin American art auction happened at Christie’s. The auction has marked a record for a sculpture of Colombian Fernando Botero. As per the auction house around 86% of the 76 samples of Latin American art have been sold and a great amount of interest was shown in the masterpieces from Latin America.
Amongst the lot, the artist who bagged the highest bid was none other than Botero, by earning around $5.3 million and out of which $1.6 million was solely fetched for his statue of “Smoking Woman.” The auction labeled a record for female artists and marked their return from Mexico to India including Amelia Pelaez, Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo and Rodolfo Morales. Total sales generated by the auction stood at $21.7 million.
